If you find yourself in New Orleans, let me introduce you to a hidden gem known as Phoenix Bar, located at 941 Elysian Fields Ave, New Orleans, LA 70117. This vibrant establishment embodies the spirit of the Crescent City with its welcoming atmosphere and eclectic crowd. The bar is hailed as a premier destination, especially within the LGBTQ+ community, where respect and inclusivity reign supreme, creating a laid-back environment for all.
From the moment you step inside Phoenix Bar, you can feel the pulse of this spirited locale. As Jay Larson raves, it's "the best place in all of New Orleans," attributing its charm to the awesome staff, budget-friendly drinks, and an exciting clientele that keeps the energy high. Jimmy Prantalos endorses it as the "best gay bar in Nola," where pretentiousness is left at the door, and good vibes are a guarantee.
One of the standout features of Phoenix Bar is its unique two-story layout. The upstairs lounge, accessible after 9:00 p.m., offers an inviting space to unwind. Though some patrons like Chip Davis have noted that the beer served can be a bit on the warm side, the view from the balcony overlooking Bourbon Street makes up for it, offering a spectacular glimpse into the lively heart of New Orleans.
It’s also worth mentioning that Phoenix Bar operates on a cash-only basis, a detail Raul Sanchez emphasized for first-time visitors. This creates a unifying simplicity that mirrors the bar's overall charm. There's a certain thrill in mingling with locals and fellow travelers alike, where stories are shared, and friendships blossom over reasonably priced drinks. As Steven Rose fondly reflects, the delightful ambiance paired with low prices and no cover charge sets the stage for an enjoyable night.
As a food reviewer, while the focus is often on cuisine, the true highlight at Phoenix Bar is the community and camaraderie that unfolds around its tables. Each visit brings a new opportunity to connect with people from all walks of life and, in true NOLA fashion, celebrate diversity. Whether you’re nestled on a bar stool or dancing the night away, Phoenix Bar invites you to embrace the moment.
So, if you happen to be in the area, grab your friends or make new ones at Phoenix Bar. With its alluring atmosphere and spirited patrons, it's sure to become a favorite spot in your New Orleans adventure. Remember, as you prepare for your visit, be mindful of the house rules regarding bag policies, as they ensure a smoother experience for all. Phoenix Bar awaits you with open arms and a promise of unforgettable memories!

Went here for a party thrown for a friend. Was a laid back atmosphere with everyone respecting all, even a straight person like me! Highly recommend you come here, no matter your preference!

This place is the best place in all of New Orleans. Awesome staff, cheap drinks and lively clientele.

Best gay bar in Nola. Drinks were b reasonably priced, and there was no pertention.

UPDATE: They no longer have a bag check (or maybe never did but provided the courtesy out of politeness) so you must carry your shirt if you wish to remove any items of clothing. Bring the bare necessities if you wish to go upstairs. Bags and fanny packs are not allowed and they will not allow you access. Still a great bar and atmosphere, but sadly I carry too much to fit into my pockets for upstairs entry! :( Respect the rules and you will have a fantastic time! One of the last true wonderful "seedy" bars left in New Orleans. No clothes check but bring a small plastic bag if you wish to take your shirt off. If you are thoughtful to the staff they will keep it for you. Tip them well too! I would recommend the second floor restroom if you need to relieve yourself due to the space to spread out.

Loved every minute of it. Cash only so he prepared but otherwise as a first time NOLA visitor, I had a fun time here and met some nice people.

The beat was pulsing as I made my way upstairs. It was a relief that it wasn't too crowded up there. Although, I was disappointed to find that even the beers were warm. I was really craving a cold one, but no such luck at the upstairs bar. When we stepped out onto the balcony, we were treated to an amazing view of Bourbon Street. The hustle and bustle down below was incredibly entertaining. The bar staff were all top-notch.

It's my neighborhood bar. They have a great store, it's what I usually go there for. It's what you would expect to find if you did a search for "sex shop".

Best bar in New Orleans by far. Nice people - patrons and staff. You will have a great time here. Reasonable prices. Never a cover. Check out the upstairs lounge after 9:00 p.m.
